Quick DIY Guide to Replace Fenders in Your BMW

For owners of the classic BMW 318i, the fender is more than just sheet metal; it defines the vehicle's legendary silhouette while shielding the wheel assembly. As urban driving becomes more congested, minor parking lot scuffs or salt-induced corrosion can compromise this critical panel.

How Replace Your Fenders

If your bodywork has sustained damage, coordinating the repair with fresh bumpers is the most efficient way to restore your vehicle to factory condition. To start your project, use the following guidelines:

1. Inspect the Hidden Brackets

Look behind the panel for damage to the inner aprons or radiator support that could prevent the new fender from sitting flat.

2. Remove the Wheel Well Liner

Unsnap the plastic rivets and remove the liner to gain access to the hidden structural bolts inside the wheel arch.

3. Disconnect Lighting Harnesses

Carefully unplug any side-marker lights or turn signals that are integrated into the fender before unbolting it.

4. Unbolt the Top Rail

Loosen the row of bolts along the hood line, then remove the lower bolts located behind the bumper and near the door hinge.

5. Apply Corrosion Inhibitor

Spray a rust-preventative coating on the exposed inner frame of your 318i before positioning the new genuine fender.

6. Align and Tighten

Hand-start all bolts, align the panel gaps with the hood and door, then tighten to the factory torque specification.
